With rebrowned twist barrels signed on the rib, patent breeches engraved with a pheasant at the centre and each with gold line and screw-in plug, silver fore-sight, scroll engraved case-hardened tang, signed scroll engraved locks, the hammers each with detachable striker, figured walnut half-stock, chequered grip, engraved iron mounts, silver barrel-bolt escutcheons, and brass-tipped ramrod: in contemporary fitted mahogany case lined in green velvet, with accessories (trade label removed from lid), the exterior inscribed with the original owner's name, and with flush-fitting carrying handle, Birmingham proof marks

Lot Essay

Made for Lt. Colonel William John Codrington, Coldstream Guards, Commander-in-Chief of British forces in the Crimea in 1855, M.P. for Greenwich 1857-9, and Governor of Gilbraltar 1859-1865. The late owner received it as a gift from his son, General Sir Alfred Codrington in 1935
