INDENTCaptain Francis Cochrane Loftus (1873-1899) entered the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers from the Militia, 1892; Captain 1899; served with the West African Rifles and took part in operations in Sierra Leone (dangerously wounded when saving one of his men under heavy fire; recommended for the Victoria Cross). Captain Loftus was killed in action at the Battle of Colenso when "leading and cheering his men on in the foremost ranks of the Irish Brigade", 15th December, 1899 (The Last Post by Dooner, refers).
