INDENTHer Royal Highness, Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, a great benefactor of the nursing service, founded, in her name, both a hospital, 1894 and the Army Nursing Reserve, the latter being the precursor of the Queen Alexandra Nursing Service.
No complete roll exists for the London Hospital Nurses who were appointed, "by the express desire of Her Majesty Queen Alexandra", to serve during the South African War. Queen Alexandra's Cross was presented to only those Nurses from the London Hospital who rendered outstanding service.
