This example is the first of only two examples of the 'Double Rietveld' made by Arad. Its design is based on Arad's slightly earlier 'Single Rietveld' adjustable rocking chair which was first launched at the 1991 Milan Furniture Fair. Both prototypes were made in Arad's London studio under his direct supervision.
'Double Rietveld' powerfully expresses Arad's interest in both line and movement. Here, he has effected movement both physically, through the springing and rocking action of the chair, and visually, by compelling a shift of attention across the highly graphic lines of the design. Depending on the intimacy desired by the two occupants, the seats can be brought closer together or set farther apart. With a single occupant, an image of the sitter is reflected back in the highly polished surfaces of the empty opposite seat.
