The composition of this is almost identical to one in the Nationalbibliothek, Vienna (Cod. mixt. 313); ours however has a small rock from which the leaves arise. Much has been written about the origin and dating of these saz leaf studies and the related dragon studies; claims have been made for both Turkey and Persia, and both the sixteenth and seventeeth centuries.
