Lot Essay

Jacques van Oostenrik, dit Dautriche, maître in May 1765.

This secretaire is virtually identical, save for the apron mount, to that stamped by Dautriche and illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 222, fig. C., while the apron mount itself also features in his oeuvre, such as on the secretaire with trellis-parquetry and on an encoignure illustrated in Kjellberg (op. cit., p. 223, figs D and E, respectively). This combination of mounts was not exclusive, however, and was also employed on a commode by Jean-François Oeben (ibid., p. 618) and a secretaire by Jacques Bircklé (ibid., p. 70, fig. B).
