2 volumes, large 4o (320 x 248 mm). Half-titles, 7 engraved portraits, 6 engraved plates including one double-page and 2 illustrations in text, one leaf of advertisments at the end of vol. I. (F2 in vol. I with short marginal tear.) Original blue-grey boards, uncut, printed paper label on each spine (spine of vol. II splitting with spine ends repaired, some minor chipping and rubbing to joints and edges); cloth folding cases. Provenance: purchased from Scribner Rare Books, New York, 3 September 1969.

FIRST EDITION. FINE IN ORIGINAL BOARDS. "The large volumes with their broad margins are handsome specimens of the excellent typographical work of the Bentleys." Pepys' famous diary remained in cipher until 1825, when it was deciphered by John Smith and edited by Lord Braybrooke.
