SMITH, Charles. Smith's Terrestrial Globe exhibiting the whole of the Discoveries of the different circumnavigators to 1810 published by C. Smith, Strand Oct 1 1810.
A terrestrial pocket globe, diameter 3¾ inches (95 mm) overall height 8½ inches (215 mm), 12 hand-coloured engraved gores. The globe marking the tracks of Cook's Third voyage, La Perouse, Vancouver and others, original light varnish, metal pinions (a few minor abrasions, two areas near the equator with varnish rubbed away, varnish slightly discoloured). The globe with brass hour cap and meridian circle, mounted in miniature English-style dark wood tripod stand, horizon bar supported by four quadrants to turned column with four downswept feet (varnish on horizon bar rubbed).
A fine example of Smith's larger pocket globe, on a delightful miniature stand. The geography of the globe includes the lost island of Isle Grande off Argentina, 'discovered' in 1675 by Antonio de la Roche but never sighted again, despite La Perouse's search in 1785. Smith described the island as 'very doubtful'.
