Newchwang was one of the ports where the Shanghai Council offered a service from April 1866. In 1867 the Imperial Maritime Customs began a very limited mail service and this operated on a reciprocal basis with the Shanghai agency. The service continued untl 2nd February 1897. It is believed that a Newchwang resident, who was on the Shanghai subscribers' list acted as agent for part of this period. No special postmarks were employed, the mail using the adhesives and services of the Chefoo office. Mail clearly originating from Newchwang is very scarce indeed
