A German gilt-metal quarter striking table clock
Probably Augsburg. Circa 1600
The case on spreading moulded base cast with fruit and flowers within formal strapwork and resting on unusual pomegranate feet to each corner, the brass base plate pierced in the centre with a petal pattern as a sound fret for the bell housed in the base, the side panels flanked by draped and tassled Corinthian columns, the panels cast with formal strapwork and urns issuing flowers and foliage, the top surmounted by a galleried balustrade for the bell supported by foliate volutes and surmounted by a spire finial, the main dial with silvered Roman chapter disc, the centre engraved with previously enamelled flowerheads and foliage and central (redundant) alarm disc, the rear dial with silver discs for hour and quarter strikes both formerly enamelled and engraved with foliage inhabited with birds, the movement constructed entirely of iron with square section pillars, the front section housing the chain fusee for the going train with verge escapement now converted to pendulum (pendulum lacking), the rear section housing twin chain fusees for the hour and quarter strike on bells in the base and in the galleried top
