Chancery 2o (278 x 200 mm). Collation: [1-410 5-158]. 127 leaves (of 128; without the final blank). 35 lines. Roman type 2:115 (leaded to about 112). 8-line initial O in red with penwork extending into the margin to start the text (1/1r), 7-line initial C (14/2r), marginal penwork on 15/6v. 2-line rubricator's heading on 1/1r, manuscript headings, catchwords and marginalia, paragraph marks in red. (Some occasional pale marginal spotting, pale marginal dampstaining in the last quire.) 18th-century Italian pasteboard, remains of ?original 15th-century waste-paper backstrip (backstrip mostly parted, wear at extremities). Provenance: Monastery of St. Radegunde, at Poictiers (inscription on 1/1: "Hoc liber ptinet y loco Sa.. Radegudis apud Nouia civitat") -- ?Conarenbus Mauthennenai (early signature on 1/1) -- Estelle Doheny (paper bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 31 August 1944) -- donated to SMS 1944.
FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF THE FIRST BOOKS PRINTED IN PADUA. Bartholomaeus de Valdezoccho and Martinus de Septem Arborus printed an edition of Boccaccio's Fiammetta dated 21 March 1472, recognized as the first book printed in Padua. Two other works were printed prior to this first edition of the canonist Zocchi's text, notably Bagellardus's De aegritudinibus et remediis infantium, the first printed book on pediatrics.
