Two parts in one, 8o (140 x 94 mm). Collation: a-s8, t4. Each part with woodcut title-border of standing figures and small tablets bearing the words "Faith," "Hope" and "Charity," each page printed within one of 18 different historiated woodcut borders which incorporate small Biblical figures (each labelled) in a scrolling frame, while the bottom of the page shows a skull flanked by small compartments containing xylographic mottos ("As you are so were we, As we be So shall ye" etc.) (Some woodcut borders shaved at outer edge by binder, occasional minor stains.) Nineteenth-century dark blue straight-grained morocco gilt, edges gilt (lightly rubbed). Provenance: Extensive marginalia and notes on the last final blank page in an early English hand -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate).

FIRST EDITION of this popular devotional work embellished with elaborate woodcut borders. Rare; no copy has appeared at auction in at least 25 years. STC 924.
