A SWISS GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A MINIATURE
by Moulinié & Bautte (fl. 1793-1821), marked, Geneva, 1809-1814, with the restriced warranty marks for gold in the French departments 1809-1814, later struck with two Parisian post-1838 restricted warranty marks for gold and the Dutch post-1955 mark for 18 carat gold, the miniature circle of Jean-Daniel Welper, circa 1760
Oval box, the sides and base with panels of wavy horizontal engine-turning creating a moiré pattern, the base panel framed by a frosted border stamped with trailing foliage and flowers, the side pilasters similarly stamped with anthemia, the lid centred by a glazed oval miniature depicting two gentlemen, one in black silk robes with white-piped bands, the other in pale blue satin coat and grey satin waistcoat, decorated with the blue sash and breast-star of the Royal French Order of the Holy Ghost, both with powdered curled wigs

Lot Essay

The sitters of the miniature have tentatively been identified as duc de Choiseul and his priest but the black robes are more probably those of a member of one of the French Parlements.
