A PAIR OF SAFAVID CARVED WOODEN DOORS
Iran, 16th century
Each of rectangular form with two panels, the lower larger panel elaborately carved with interlaced arabesques enclosing panels of palmettes and floral motifs in a border of meandering flowering vine, the upper panel with an elegantly written naskh inscription within a similar border, all framed within bands of interlaced strapwork and rosettes, hinge lug above and below, the reverse of each plain, lacking original lower panel, surface weathered

Lot Essay

The inscription consists of Persian verses which can be translated:
"May this door [always] be blessed with joy and good-fortune
May it [always] be open to friends and close to heaven
As long as the Moon and Venus ... are in the heaven
There is prosperity in this house and good fortune accompanies this door".
