Cartouche-shaped box, the lid centred by a shield-shaped cartouche enamelled in translucent blue on a radiating engine-turned ground and applied with paste-set scrolling initial 'A' a Royal crown above for Albert I (1828-1902), King of Saxony 1873-1902, flanked by six silver-mounted paste stones surrounded by cast gold branches interwoven with blue enamelled leavage, the wavy baluster sides engraved with an ozier pattern interspersed with floral cartouches, the base centred by a reserve engraved with a posy of flowers surrounded by strapwork on an ozier ground framed by a border of small feathery scrolls, blue enamelled leaf and branch thumbpiece; original fitted black fishskin case

According to an old handwritten label inside the box, 'given to my father George Edward Cokayne by Albert King of Saxony in 1882 on his investiture with the "Garter".'

Lot Essay

Albert I, King of Saxony, was the eldest son of King Johann I of Saxony. As a General Field Marshal of the Prussian and Russian Armies, he distinguished himself on the Austrian side in 1866 and on the side of Prussia against France in 1870. In 1853, he was married to Carola, only daughter of Prince Gustaf Wasa. As a king, he was highly intelligent and noted for his kindness. He died without posterity and was succeeded by his younger brother, the future King George I of Saxony.
