The design for this clock is inspired by the celebrated drawing executed circa 1805 and attributed to Jean-André Reiche, which is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer P. Pröschel et. al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 374, fig. 5.15.3. The original model is one of the most liked and often copied clocks.

Another version of the same model is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe siècle, Paris, 1997, p. 398, ill. B.

A virtually identical clock was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 23-24 May 1985, lot 278. Another virtually identical clock was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 21 December 1988, lot 121.
