A George III red japanned longcase clock, circa 1765
The case decorated overall with gilt chinoiserie, the pagoda hood with fretwork roundel and with later carved giltwood displayed eagle cresting flanked by brass ball and eagle finials, with inset columns and glazed side panels, the breakarch trunk door with moulded frame and decorated with Chinese figures, pagodas, a bird and a sheep, the stepped plinth similarly decorated, the 12in. brass dial with urn and foliate spandrels to a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring signed John Done LONDON, the matted centre with subsidiary silvered seconds ring and date aperture, black painted hands, the arch with silvered and engraved Chronos rocking against a blue backdrop decorated with gilt stars, the four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell -- 97in. (246.5cm.) high
