BIBLE, in English -- The Holy Bible with a devotional and practical commentary, edited by Robert Jamieson and Edward Henry Bickersteth. London: James S. Virtue, [c. 1889]. 4° (360 x 255mm). Engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved additional titles, 3 leaves with engraved borders after Hablot K. Brown for the entry of marriages, births and deaths, 36 engraved plates, including 4 mezzotints after John Martin, 2 coloured maps. (A few minor waterstains.) Original black morocco, ornately tooled in gilt and blind, gilt inner dentelles, blue watered silk doublures, gilt edges (a few small light scuff marks on upper cover).
AN INTERESTING ASSOCIATION COPY, presented to the Stanleys as a wedding gift from the Baptist churches of Colwyn bay, the front doublure gilt-tooled in upper case: 'Presented as a token of the highest esteem and regard by the English and Welsh Baptist Churches of Colwyn Bay, North Wales, at the desire of their pastor, Rev. W. Hughes, to Henry M. Stanley, Esq., on the occasion of his marriage to Miss Dorothy Tennant wishing that the union may be long, most happy, useful and prosperous. July 12th, 1890'; together with another Holy Bible (London, Gresham Press, 1886, 2 vols. including index, 4°) presented to the couple by Enriqueta Rylands.
