A MESOPOTAMIAN-ELAMITE BRONZE MACE HEAD
LATE 3RD MILLENNIUM B.C.
The long cylindrical shaft with narrow flanged base, the upper section with three vertical relief panels of a herringbone motif divided and bordered by parallel ridges, similar band with ridged grooves around the base, 8 in. (20.3 cm.) high; an Elamite bronze mace head, the upper section divided into two registers, each with prominent vertical rows of spikes alternating with a hatched band containing a snake-like motif, twin cord-like bands bordering above and below, faint traces of incised chevrons on the lower section, late 3rd millennium B.C., 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) high; and two Luristan bronze mace heads with octagonal shafts and ribbed bases, the swollen upper bodies with faceted knobs, bordered by grooved encircling bands, early 1st millennium B.C., both 5½ in. (14 cm.) high (4)
