A George III mahogany and inlaid longcase clock, circa 1790
The hood with elaborately fluted cresting and inlaid paterae, outset line inlaid columns with composite capitals, rear slats lacking, with pie-crust frame to the door, the wavy arch trunk door with inlaid ovals and flanked by line-inlaid chamfered angles, the plinth with further oval and crossbanding, on stepped skirting, the 13in. wide white painted Roman and Arabic dial with dot minute track, the spandrels painted with seasonal female figures, the centre with subsidiary seconds ring and arched date aperture, the seconds ring with painted fly (later?), signed G. TAYLOR/SHEPTON MALLET, brass hands, the arch painted with exotic animals flanking an apple tree with entwined serpent (formerly with Adam and Eve figures), with falseplate stamped WILSON to the four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell; dial and movement possibly associated to case -- 88½in. (225cm.) high
