Lot Essay

Offered in the 1874 catalogue, the naturalistic interpretation and treatment of the pheasant's plumage are characteristic of Barye's late models. With its hollowed tree stump, Faisan doré de la Chine may also have been intended as a decorative match holder, or other functional object. After 1876, the model was edited by Brame.
