Lot Essay

Conceived in 1840, along with its pendant, Jaguar qui marche No2, Jaguar debout No2 was first offered in Besse's 1844 catalogue. During Barye's lifetime, the model was edited by Victor Paillard, as here, and posthumously, by Brame. Another épreuve bearing Victor Paillard's stamp is in the collection of the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore.
