TWO INKCAKES
LATE MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

Both of rectangular form, the first finely carved on one side with various insects in flight and amidst leaves and vegetation, the reverse side with three characters, Chong si yu, 'Small grasshoppers', followed by a square seal Yini zisun, 'May (you) have many generations', the side moulded with the maker's mark Xi Pan Jiake zhi, 'made by Pan Jiake of Anhui province'; the other finely carved with a gnarled tree growing on a slope, partially shrouded by wispy clouds, amidst grass and lingzhi fungus, the reverse with three characters Daqian chun, 'Universal Spring', followed by a square seal (losses)
