A 19th-Century lacquered-brass swinging-arm protractor,
signed Troughton & Simms, LONDON, in a fitted mahogany case -- 17.5cm. (6 7/8in.) wide
The glass viewing aperture at the centre of the instrument has a copper mounting and a sighting cross scratched on the glass. The main index has a swinging arm at either end and two silvered verniers to read off the main silvered circumference scale. Mounted on another short arm from the central hub is the screw clamp and tangent screw for fine adjustment. The fitted case has two brass eyes (hooks missing).
