A PRESENTATION SWORD OF THE STAFFORDSHIRE RIFLE VOLUNTEERS

A rare and magnificent sword, the slightly curved fullered blade finely etched for approximately three-quarters of its length with rich foliate decoration, one side bearing a family coat-of-arms and motto 'Arva Quam Vis Parva', a device of crossed sword and mace above a bugle-horn, and the inscription 'Presented To William Kenwright Harvey Esqr. Of Longton, on his retirement from the Captaincy of the 2nd Company Of Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers, As A Mark Of The Respect And Esteem Entertained For Him By His Fellow-Townsmen Jan 29th 1861', the other side bearing a bugle-horn and Stafford Knot beneath the crowned 'VR' cypher, a garter and other devices, the ornately-pierced silver guard decorated with oakleaves, acorns, 'VR' cypher above a bugle-horn and Stafford Knot, a crest, and scrolls inscribed 'Staffordshire Rifle Volunteers', wire-bound chequered wood grip and pommel in the form of a Leopard's head, and silver scabbard (hallmarked en suite with the sword), silversmith's mark SH
