A SCOTTISH BASKET-HILTED BACKSWORD
Second quarter of the 18th Century
With later straight hollow-ground blade double-edged towards the point, iron hilt comprising guard of characteristic form of slender rounded vertical bars framing rectangular panels pierced with triangles and arches, fore-guards (squashed), and flat scrolled rear quillon, associated pommel of truncated conical shape, and wooden sharkskin-covered wire-bound grip with at the top a later silver plaque engraved 'Falkirk 1744' (some surface rust and rust-staining)
