A German gilt-metal and ebony striking figural table clock
Attributed to Daniel Habrecht II, Strasbourg. Circa 1640
The well cast figure of the Madonna holding the infant Jesus pointing (hand and pointer restored) to a silver rotating crown atop the Madonna's head engraved with Arabic chapters (1 to 12), the Holy figures framed from behind by a gilt-metal flaming halo, supported on a moulded ebony plinth with D-ended panels set with gilt-metal sound frets finely pierced and engraved with birds within scrolling foliage centred by an urn, the movement with rectangular gilt-brass plates secured with four unusual baluster pillars, the going train with verge escapement with restored blued steel balance with S-form gilt-brass balance cock screwed to the back plate and with restored hog's bristle regulation, the strike train with calibrated blued steel countwheel recessed to the back plate and with elaborate foliate engraved strike gate, the bell typically housed within the movement cover plate and struck by means of a finely pierced and engraved lion hammer head, the back plate stamped DH conjoined within a shield interrupting the florally engraved border and with a further engraved 'fly' to the side of the balance cock
