Lot Essay

The rare form of the present tray is a variation on the more common plateau 'ovale polylobe' also known as a plateau à baguettes the moulded rim of which is continuous, forming loops on the border at the junction of the four lobes and pierced at the ends with the ribbon tails entwined through the gaps. The decoration is very similar in spirit to that found on two plates of 1782 in the collection of Robert R. and Pauline S. Heitner painted by de Laroche and offered as lots 287 and 289 in the present sale.

Antoine Toussaint Cornailles is recorded at Vincennes and Sèvres as a flower painter and gilder 1755-1800. Henry-François Vincent père had an equally long-lived career as a gilder, recorded 1753-1800.
