Two early 20th-Century 6-inch globe timepieces,
comprising an unmatched terrestrial and celestial globe, by George Philip & Sons, London -- 30cm. (11 7/8in.) high

PHILIP'S 6inch TERRESTRIAL GLOBE LONDON GEOGRAPHICAL INSTITUTE GEORGE PHILIP & SON LTD 32 FLEET STREET PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN. The globe is made up of twelve chromolithographed gores and two polar calottes. The equatorial is graduated in degrees and hours; the prime meridian and equinoctial colure are graduated in degrees; the ecliptic is ungraduated. The oceans show ocean currents and steamship routes with ports of arrival and departure and distance in nautical miles. The continents show nation states variously coloured with the British Empire in red, with towns, cities and rivers (somewhat dirty and slightly rubbed). From the brass finial extends an index to read off the chamfered brass horizon ring, graduated in twice twelve hours. The globe is mounted on two gear wheels above a brass column, with a wire arm for the brass moon ball extending from the mounting. The column is mounted on a brass drum plinth which houses the clockwork mechanism.

The equatorial is graduated in hours; the colures and ecliptic are ungraduated. The constellations are depicted in yellow on a black ground, by lines between the stars, which are shown to five orders of magnitude (some minor rubbing; one small hole and one infilled small hole). From the brass finial extends an index arm to read off the chamfered brass horizon circle, graduated in twice twelve hours. The globe is mounted on two gear wheels, with a wire arm for the brass moon ball, over a fluted brass column. The column stands on a small stepped brass drum base housing the clockwork mechanism, stamped on the underside 833 and MADE IN FRANCE. (2)
