A Kikuchi Yari
Unsigned, Enju School, Muromachi Period (Early 15th Century)
Blade unokubi-zukuri with thick kasane, short grooves either side, forging pattern o-itame with masame near the edge, tempered edge ko-midare with nie with much sunagashi, the blade with the original machi but the tang suriage with two holes, nagasa 5 3/8in. (13.9cm.), in a black lacquer scabbard decorated in gold hiramaki-e with butterflies, overall length 10¼in. (26cm.)

Lot Essay

The Kikuchi family of Higo Province were supporters of the Southern Dynasty in the Nambokucho Period. Kikuchi yari were made by the Enju School of smiths of Higo Province. As in this case, many have been shortened for use as tanto.
