Ozaki Suketaka was born in 1752 and died in 1805, he worked in Osaka in a style reminiscent of Tsuta Sukehiro.
Between the mid 17th and mid 19th century few Japanese were able to gain firsthand information about foreigners. The details for depictions such as that on the kashira had to be pieced together from hearsay. The imaginative combination of the ijin [foreign, non-Japanese] depicted here, features the fan, sash and shoes, probably Chinese, the pantaloons Spanish, the hat Korean and the coat Dutch with the exception of the ruffs at the shoulders, which surely belong to the world of the artist's imagination. In addition, the figure is clearly shown to be wearing an inro.
