CHURCHILL, Sir W.L.S. Autograph letter signed ('Winston S. Churchill') to Pamela Plowden, 35a Great Cumberland Place, London, 28 November [1898], 5½ pages, 8°.
'TRUE TILL DEATH': Churchill writes on the eve of departure for India, asking for a meeting; he attempts to illustrate his own philosophy with a quotation from General Gordon, 'we need not fret ourselves at what the world says', admitting however Pamela's charge that 'I make unnecessary enemies ... I confess I think in many cases, it is an extravagance, that is all', promising nevertheless to take her advice. He rejoices in the progress of his book [The River War] and expresses admiration of General Gordon -- 'General -- fanatic & wit'; referring in passing to a new female acquaintance ('I wonder if I arouse your curiosity'). The letter ends with an outburst of passion, in response to her charge that he is 'incapable of affection': 'I love one above all others. And I shall be constant ... My love is deep and strong. Nothing will ever change it. I might it is true divide it. But the greatest part would remain true - will remain true till death'.
