'I AM AMONG FATE'S CHOSEN ONES'. Einstein has very much enjoyed Eduard's letter -- 'In reading it, I really felt like a hen that's hatched a duck egg'. The self-analysis was particularly good: 'If we already have to make an effort to be a good man, we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously'; man is an ape hardly become two-legged, a short-lived little particle of consciousness ('ein kurz dauerndes Stückchen Bewusstsein'). Einstein looks forward to a holiday with Eduard, though Hans Albert will be far too busy studying. He himself is working hard, but bringing nothing to a conclusion. 'I'm really happy that neither of you chose a scientific career, because it's a tough thing, full of fruitless hard work. And yet I am still so to speak among fate's chosen ones!'.
