MUSIC, SCHOPENHAUER AND HIS OWN BAD ENGLISH. Einstein reproves his younger son for despising Haydn's sonatas -- 'The second for example is a work of great spirituality. At your age I was enchanted by it'; he suggests playing them on the spinet rather than the piano; also commending the works of Scarlatti. 'In the end music is something for feeling and not for intellect ... In life, too, character and feeling are worth more than a clever mind -- even in science'. On the subject of Schopenhauer, Einstein agrees with Eduard that the magnificent style is much better than the actual content, and suggests that his son learn English, as it will help him in the most valuable relationships in life: 'I very much regret that I can only communicate with the English in writing'. He hopes to be able to spend a few days' holiday with Eduard in March.
