TWO FRENCH STEEL-HILTED SMALL-SWORDS
Each late 18th Century
The first with tapering blade of hollow triangular section etched on each face of the forte with formal ornament enclosing, on one side, the crowned Bourbon royal arms, and on the other, the inscription 'Vive Le Roy', the hilt with solid oval guard with waved edge, and chiselled in relief with trophies, urns, scrollwork, and bouquets of flowers, some within oval frames, all on a gilt fishroe ground (gilding worn), the grip with its original binding of silver ribbon and plaited silver wire (blade and hilt rust-patinated); the second with similar blade with etched, blued and gilt decoration on each face of the forte and the bladesmith's initials 'I.G.B' on the inner side, the parcel-gilt hilt pierced with trellis-work enclosing baskets of fruit, the grip with its original binding of steel and silver ribbon and steel wire
