Lot Essay

The present lot is a bronze reduction of a late Hadrianic marble, itself a copy of a Pergamene school figure dating to the second century BC, that is housed in the Musei Vaticani, Rome. In the modern era, the identity of the sitter has been a mystery although suggestions have ranged from Cleopatra, to Ariadne and Dido.
