The rounded cup is carved from agate striated with bands of dark brown, yellowish-brown and grey, fitted with a small gold handle

Lot Essay

Tang dynasty vessels carved from banded agate are published. Cf. a slightly larger bowl (13.5 cm. diam.) excavated in 1995 in Xian, Shaanxi province, illustrated in Zhongguo Yuqi Quanji, vol. 5, pl. 29, where it had been suggested that it was used for medicine, ibid p. 235; a rhyton, pl. 28; and a ear-cup, pl. 27.
