These Christmas cards were sent to interior designer Kenneth Partridge. Epstein hired Mr Partridge to decorate his flat for a party he was throwing for The Beatles and EMI executives prior to The Beatles' first trip to the U.S. in August, 1964. Lennon had been impressed with Mr Partridge's transformation of Epstein's flat for the party, and asked him if he could look at Kenwood, the house he and Cynthia were moving into in Weybridge. Addressing the card to "the builder" is Lennon's tongue-in-cheek reference to Mr Partridge's job as interior designer. The slogan on the placard, DOWN WITH MURPHY, refers to the foreman in charge of the construction team who had apparently insisted that a guitar Lennon had given to the carpenter for his children should be handed over to him as the person in charge.
