Lot Essay

Launched in 1937 and completed in 1938 for W.W. Tonsberg, the M.V. Trafalgar was fitted as a General Cargo Liner, able to carry twelve passengers and cargo at 15 knots. She was torpedoed by U-129 in October 1942 and, whilst no crew were lost, it was eleven days before land was sighted. It transpired that this was the island of Desirade which, being Vichy French controlled, they were merely given a bucket of fresh water and ordered back to the sea. Fortunately the next day they reached Dominica where jubilant crowds fêted them and, after a rest, they boarded a U.S. sub-chaser, reaching Trinidad twenty-three days after the loss of Trafalagar
