WEST IRAN, 14TH CENTURY
Of typical form with rounded base rising through sloping sides to the T-section rim, the sides engraved and inlaid in silver with diaper pattern around inscription roundels containing a bold thuluth inscription alternating with quatrefoils containing a fine naskh inscription, trefoil palmettes containing lotus flowers below, simple band of lobed motifs around the mouth, the interior with a typical stylised fish-pond design, surface rubbed, some loss of silver inlay, gold inlay almost completely missing
7 3/8in. (18.9cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The silver inlaid inscription in the roundels reads:
al-'izz li-mawlana (LA) al-sultan [al-]a'zam malik-e riqab al-umam (A) al-sultan sala tin al-'arab wa al-'ajam (LA) (Glory to our Lord, The Greatest sultan, the one who curbs nations, the Sultan of [all] sultans of the Arabs and non-Arabs)
The smaller inscription, originally inlaid in gold, contains paired benedictory phrases
The underside has four later owners' inscriptions in the names of:
Mulla Sultan Muhammad Tuni, Haji Subhan, Abu Taleb 1211 (1786-7 AD) and Haji Muhammad Nasr
