Finely carved in high relief with a mountain landscape scene, detailed with a messenger on horseback holding a flag in one hand and galloping towards two gentlemen seated beside a flowing stream playing a game of chess, observed by an attendant and two ladies standing under gnarled pinetrees, in the near distance an attendant is crouched beside a brazier on which a teapot is placed in preparation for brewing tea, age cracks

Lot Essay

This scene is known as "Report of War Victory at Eastern Mountain", and was a popular imagery among Qing dynasty carvers. The story is of a historical army commander, Xie An, of the Jin dynasty who, during a game of weiqi with his guest at Eastern Mountain, was interrupted by a messenger bringing news of his army's battle victory, but on receiving the message Xie nonchalantly continued with the game.
