A Japanese shitan wood inro-dokei
19th Century
The curved rectangular case with brass glazed aperture to the circular dial with blued steel movable Japanese chapters and steel arrowhead hand, the movement with curved upright plates engraved with ferns on a stipple ground, chain and fusee to the spring barrel, three-wheel train terminating with a verge escapement, the oval platform atop the plates with foliate pierced balance cock, the shitan case with a secret key compartment within the lid; with the original softwood travelling box with extra compartment for accompanying shitan compass and sundial with sliding lid, the base of the travelling box with Edinburgh Museum of Science inventory label
