Details
A unique finely detailed exhibition standard scale model condensing horizontal compound steam driven refrigeration plant built by J.& E. Hall Ltd, Dartford, and modelled by J.A. Mulhern, circa 1935
Engine details include waxed blued steel-clad cylinders 1¼in. bore x 2 1/8in. stroke, with piston HP and slide LP valves timed for the engine to run in an inwards direction, cylinder and valve chest draincocks and pipework, LP cylinder head pressure relief valves, valve rod tail shaft guides, main stop valve and heated lagged transfer pipe and steam valve, crossheads with lock nutted and splitpinned bolts, wick-type main bearing lubricator pots, and centrally mounted split counterbalanced disc flywheel with dog and tooth locking mechanism on the right-hand side. Further details include eccentric driven feed pump with expansion dome and pipework and crank driven air pump, exhaust pipework to surface condenser with flanged joints, shut off valve and provision for non-condensing exhaust, and right hand side mounted crank pin-driven condenser and refrigerant coolant circulating pump with expansion domes and bleed cocks. The two refrigerant gas compressors are direct coupled to the piston rod tail shafts and have independent liquid/gas circuits with appropriate valves, draincocks, make-up pumps and pipework and other fine details. The engine and compressors are mounted above the refrigerant coolant tank which is fitted with manhole covers, detachable side plates, pressure relief valves and fine strengthening rib detailing. The model is finished in grey and polished brightwork with "wood" lagged transfer pip and cream exhaust pipes -- 20cm x 57cm. (8 x 22½in.)
