Lot Essay

Bertoia's Sound Sculptures were the result of a happy accident in 1959. While bending a rod for a sculpture, it broke and struck another rod making a sound. The resonant sound inspired Bertoia to experiment with various metals and lengths to create a variety of sounds and forms. The present work is a grand scale example of the series, both visually stunning and harmonious.
