Lot Essay

This model relates to ewers executed by the bronziers Claude Galle and Antoine-André Ravrio. A portrait of the latter with a ewer of similar design in the background is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p.364, fig. 5.12.6. Related examples include the pair in the Wurttemberg Landesmuseum, Stuttgart and another at the Palace of Pavlovsk, St. Petersburg.
