The rectangular black granite top above a frieze centred by a patera flanked by stylised palmettes, fitted with a drawer mounted with flowerhead-decorated knobs, above a fall-front enclosing eight drawers and an open shelf, the central drawer hiding two secret pigeon-holes and two secret drawers, above two doors enclosing three drawers, the angles decorated with monopodiae decorated with entwined snakes and fruiting foliage, above a plinth and ebonised foliate paw feet

Lot Essay

With its distinctive foliate-wrapped paw feet, this secretaire recalls that sold in November 1804 by the marchand Antoine-Thibaut Baudouin for the château de Fontainebleau. Placed in the chambre à coucher du Pape in the Gros Pavillon, it is illustrated and discussed in J.P. Samoyault, Meubles entrés sous le Premier Empire, Paris, 2004, no. 118.
