Each of the arched rectangular padded backs and seats covered in red and gold foliate silk damask, on square baluster legs carved with foliate scroll, on a trellis ground, joined by serpentine stretchers and an arched stretcher, on square gadrooned pinched feet, regilt, some rerailing, the back possibly reshaped (2)

Lot Essay

The chairs, with taper-hermed and acanthus-wreathed legs, are designed in the Louis XIV Roman fashion popularised by the Paris-trained architect Daniel Marot (d.1752) and featured in table-patterns in his, Nouveaux Livre dOrfevrerie, c.1700.
