Pairs of such chiffonier commodes with shelves for books and china became fashionable around 1800 and generally flanked the living room fireplace. With their plinth-supported and palm-wrapped trusses terminating in bacchic lion-paws, they also reflect the robust Grecian fashion of the early 19th century. A related chiffonier, with brass-trellised doors, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 19 June 1991, lot 1029.
