A RARE DUTCH IVORY-MOUNTED LONG WHEEL-LOCK HOLSTER PISTOL
circa 1640-50, probably Maastricht
With slender tapering barrel formed in three stages with turned girdle, flat lock formed with a separate tail and strongly bevelled edges interrupted below the wheel and behind the pan, sliding pan-cover, slender ebony full stock formed with a simple long tapering low moulding about the barrel tang, inset with a pair of ivory washers impaled by the side-nails, fluted fore-end (cracked and with numerous small chips along the edges), the butt fitted with silver collar and slightly bulbous carved fluted ivory pommel retained by a single decorated screw, slotted baluster ramrod-pipe, iron fore-end cap, and original iron-tipped ebony ramrod.

拍品專文

Ivory-mounted pistols of this type are attributed stylistically to the Maastricht area. A single pistol and a pair of pistols of this type are in the Visser collection (cat.nos 216 and 226, HV 393 and HV 515/516). The form of the lock is unusual and again compares to two Visser examples (cat.nos 179 and 237, HV 33 and HV 62/63).

Similar pairs of pistols are also in the former armoury of Count Carl Gustav Wrangel in Skokloster Castle, Sweden, and in the former Imperial Collection in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
