A RARE NUREMBERG WHEEL-LOCK PYROTECHNIC PISTOL
circa 1580-90
With 13-bore heavy brass tapering barrel cast with pronounced raised mouldings at the muzzle and at both ends of the recessed breech, plain flat lock struck with Nuremberg mark and maker's mark 'GS', a pair of scissors below (Neue Støckel 2303), fitted with brass pan with sliding cover, darkened fruitwood full stock (previously blackened in imitation of ebony), inlaid with a series of finely engraved horn plaques over its full length, including a monster, grotesque masks carried within shaped panels and a pair of human grotesques about the barrel tang, studded with further masks and an exotic bird in mother-of-pearl, and all within cabled segmental lines, fluted spherical pommel decorated en suite and fitted with horn demon mask cap, moulded iron trigger-guard, and horn ramrod-pipe engraved with a Musketeer in late 16th Century dress (belt hook removed, fore-end cap and ramrod replaced).
